Paul McCartney was honored as MusiCares' Person of the Year on Friday in L.A. at the annual pre-Grammy fundraiser. The all-star lineup included McCartney himself, as well as Foo Fighters, Alicia Keys, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Katy Perry, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Tony Bennett and Coldplay.

The night got going with an auction that brought the event's fundraising total to $6.5 million, and then the cast of Cirque du Soleil's Las Vegas Beatles show, Love, began the show with a colorful opening. Macca then took the stage with his band and blasted into "Magical Mystery Tour" and Wings' "Junior's Farm" before giving way to the all-star lineup.

In his speech, McCartney thanked the artists for "singing my songs and making them sound so beautiful" and "putting the nuances on the songs that I didn't know were there." He then teamed with pianist Diana Krall play two songs from his newly released Kisses on the Bottom standards album -- "My Valentine" (also with Joe Walsh on guitar) and "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter" -- and followed that up with Wings' "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five" and The Beatles' "Golden Slumbers"/"Carry That Weight"/"The End" suite from side two of Abbey Road, with Dave Grohl and Walsh adding additional guitar power.

The crowd of 2800 was the largest ever for a Person of the Year event. McCartney will perform again on Sunday's Grammy telecast, with Krall and Walsh joining him on "My Valentine." The show airs live from L.A. at 8:00 p.m. on CBS. --Dave Schulps
